All hail the lowly Sunflower of the Culvert

I didn’t plant it. Presumably it’s courtesy of some birdshit, because I've actually planted seed heads in the yard that failed to germinate. It’s growing in the driveway in 4 inches of gravel on top of 30 years of compacted substrate. I must carefully maneuver around it, which I consider a privilege given the fact that it brightens my every day with its relentless cheer. I've never watered it.

Never watered, growing in concrete. Ya gotta love these tough plants, especially those with such sunny faces.

Yep - they are amazing, Libby! Every year the wild sunflowers reseed all over the yard and most are weeded out. I let one or two grow in the back corner so that once the seeds form, goldfinch acrobatics can be seen from the breakfast room.

I was in Austin earlier this week. When did Austin move to Arizona? In Houston, also prenaturally dry, but not quite desert-like yet, those selfsame sunflowers line the bayou path where I walk my dog in cooler weather. They make a veritable wall of green and yellow on each side of the path, turning their faces as the sun passes overhead. The only thing in town that welcomes the sunrise these days.
